In his State of the Nation Address, President Rodrigo Duterte called on Task Force Bangon Marawi and other Authorities to accelerate reconstruction efforts in the war-torn city of Marawi and to facilitate the return of displaced families without delay to their homes.
Duterte admitted in a speech in Batasang Pambansa on Monday that the reconstruction of the capital of Lanao del Sur, is still underway, nearly four years.
President Deterte said in his final SONA. “To Task Force Bangon Marawi, we need to race against time, ”
“You have to finish the necessary work to rehabilitate the war-torn city and bring its families back home.” He added.
However, a group of civil society groups in Marawi, stated that rehabilitation is “very slow”. The organization stated that the president’s promises have not been fulfilled, including the payment of fair compensation for livelihood and property losses.
Starting on May 23, 2017, Maute group besieged the city for five months, causing considerable damage to property and infrastructure and causing deaths and forced thousands of residents to flee and live in emergency shelters provided by the government.
On October 17, 2017, Duterte announced that Marawi had been released from terrorists after five months of fighting.
Eduardo del Rosario, chairman of the Task Force Bangon Malawi, said that the restoration work is underway and they are “confident” that it will be completed by the end of the year.
