MP Maisara Dandamun-Latiph met with Lord Bruce at the House of Lords on April 7, 2022 and toured both Chambers of the UK Parliament facilitated by UK Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) upon the request of MP Maisara who earlier spoke at Wilton Park for child protection in West Sussex, UK.
The UK Parliament has two Houses that work on behalf of UK citizens to check and challenge the work of Government, make and shape effective laws, and debate/make decisions on the big issues of the day.
The House of Commons formally scrutinises the Government through its Committees and Prime Minister’s Questions, when members ask questions of the prime minister; the house gives other opportunities to question other cabinet ministers.
The House of Lords is the second chamber of UK Parliament. It plays a crucial role in examining bills, questioning government action and investigating public policy.
Lord Bruce has been a member of the UK Parliament for almost 40 years. Having been elected 7 times as an MP under the House of Commons as a Liberal Democrat under Gordon since 1983-2015.
In 2015 Lord Bruce had been appointed by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as member of the House of Lords.
Since 2020, MP Maisara has been a mentee of Lord Bruce at the UK Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) masterclasses where she learned fundamentals of parliament and her role as an MP.
She shared her insights on the development and progress of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority Parliament. While, Lord Bruce discussed his experience in political party development and membership.
