MP MAISARA FILED A RESOLUTION TO CONDUCT AN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON CLIMATE CHANGE

July 22, 2022

Member of Parliament Atty. Maisara C. Dandamun-Latiph together with other members of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority has filed a resolution urging the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) to conduct a climate change awareness campaign throughout the constituent local governments of the Bangsamoro autonomous region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Stated in the proposed measure that the Bangsamoro Organic Law provides that development in the region should be carefully planned, taking into consideration the ecological balance and the natural resources that are available for its use and the use of future generations.

The Bangsamoro government is to ensure that its constituent local government units formulate their respective local climate change action plans and for the proper and effective implementation thereof. Republic Act No. 9729, otherwise known as the “Climate Change Act of 2009,” was passed in 2009.

One of the aims of the 1st Bangsamoro Development Plan (BDP) is to improve ecological integrity and promote and enhance climate change adaptation.

More than 70% of Filipinos believe they will be at least “somewhat affected” by climate change, according to a new study. Among them, 46% reported that they would likely get harmed, injured, or ill due to the effects of climate change.

Climate change awareness in the Philippines varied from 3% in the BARMM to 24% in Caraga and 70% in Zamboanga with low or very low levels of knowledge about climate change, according to a survey.

It warns that rising temperatures, sea level rise, and extreme weather will adversely affect many areas of the country’s economy and cause significant human and environmental damage.

The said measure has been referred to the Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy.
