Member of Parliament Atty. Maisara C. Dandamun-Latiph spoke as a resource person for the “Examining the Current Trends and Prospects of Violent Extremism in Southeast Asia” virtual conference

March 18, 2021 | Member of Parliament Atty. Maisara C. Dandamun-Latiph spoke as a resource person for the “Examining the Current Trends and Prospects of Violent Extremism in Southeast Asia” virtual conference.

The virtual conference is an initiative implemented by the Association of Lady Shari’ah Counselors-At-Law of the Philippines Inc. (ALSCAP) in partnership with the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and supported by the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines. It is directly aligned with the ASEAN Plan of Action to Prevent and Counter the Rise of Radicalization and Violent Extremism (2018-2025) adopted in 2018 at the Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime 2018.

The virtual conference takes place over the course of three weeks, with four sessions held on March 10, and March 18, and to be held on March 25.

The virtual conference drew over 900 registrants from all across South-East Asia with invited global speakers from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia.

MP Latiph was a resource person for the session on National Governments’ Response to Violent Extremism: Approaches, Directions, and Ways Forward.

She discussed the National Government’s, and the Bangsamoro Government’s approaches in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE). She discussed the National Action Plan on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (NAP P/CVE), as well as the Bangsamoro Government’s efforts in preserving the gains of the peace process. She discussed the GPH-MILF Peace Process and the importance of achieving the normalization track and political track for former combatants to transition to civilian life. She discussed how according to Conflict Alert, there has been a downward trend of violence and violent extremism in the Bangsamoro Region since 2019 and hopes that through the inter coordination of the National and Bangsamoro Government, this downward trend can continue in the BARMM, and in the rest of the Philippines. Finally, she also emphasized the importance of rehabilitating Marawi City in the ways forward for the National and Bangsamoro government, and the importance of community-based PCVE approaches in the overall whole-of-nation strategy.

She was joined by Ms. Farah Pandith, a former diplomat who was appointed the first-ever specialist representative to Muslim communities in 2009 by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, an expert and pioneer in the field of Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE), and author of the book “How We Win”; Ms. Ploykarat Panorod, Assistant Police Attache at the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok who has worked on addressing human rights cases; Dr. Saranyu Mhadsri , an independent researcher focusing on Diplomacy in Islam; Mr. Tin Naing Oo from the International School in Myanmar who discussed the current situation in Myanmar, the Rohingya Refugees, and military abuses which are also examples of violent extremism; Mr. Sapwan Noor, President of the ASEAN Muslim Students’ Association in Indonesia; and Ms. Yousos Fatierny, a Muslim-minority lady politician who is a Secretary Member of the Prime Minister in the Kingdom of Cambodia.
