The Security, Justice, and Peace Cabinet Cluster (SJPCC) announced on Friday, March 4, 2022, that President Rodrigo Duterte has agreed to keep the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) in its current form.
“The SJPCC is pleased to announce that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte had approved on 21 February 2022 its recommendation to maintain the status quo on the current composition of the BTA,” it said in a statement.
According to the SJPCC, Duterte’s move will help BTA members finish their “crucial work” three months before the next elected administration takes over.
Duterte reportedly authorized the appointment of 41 Moro Islamic Liberation Front nominees backed by Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim, according to the report.
The BTA published a resolution in October encouraging Duterte to extend its members’ authority to protect their successes, particularly in programs and legislative initiatives aimed at achieving a more stable and long-term peace in the region.
The BTA issued a new resolution in February, recommending that Duterte prioritize the reappointment of its members nominated by the National Government to facilitate a seamless transition and avoid political interruptions.
“Given these major accomplishments, its current membership must not only be given due recognition but must also be given the chance to complete what it has started,” the SJPCC said.
“By keeping the status quo in the BTA, we are not only building on and sustaining the gains of the Bangsamoro peace process; we are laying the foundations where genuine development and long-lasting peace can take root and flourish, and where our Moro brothers and sisters can look ahead to a better and brighter future,” it added.
The BTA was established as an interim regional administration in the Barmm awaiting the election of new Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BAR) officials in 2022.
Following the adoption of the Bangsamoro Organic Law, which abolished the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, BARMM was founded.
