June 11, 2021

In line with this year’s celebration of the Philippine Environment Month, provincial offices of the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) in Sulu and Tawi-Tawi held clean up drives.

On June 4, Sulu Provincial ENRE Office, headed by Officer Pao N. Dambong, led a massive clean up drive activity in the coastal area of Brgy. Poblacion in Maimbung, Sulu.

“This Philippine Environment Month is a reminder that we all need to combine our efforts for the restoration of our environment,” said Dambong.

“This clean up drive should be a regular activity for the constituents in order to maintain the cleanliness of our surroundings,” he added.

Representatives from the provincial offices of BARMM’s different ministries, uniformed personnel, academe sector, and the local residents also joined the activity.

On the other hand, Tawi-Tawi PENREO, headed by Officer Jonel I. Mohammad Monel, concluded on June 5, its 12-day mangrove forest patrolling in the municipalities of South Ubian, Tandubas, Sapa-sapa and Panglima Sugala.

Environment officers conducted a maintenance activity for the areas’ mangrove plantation which included monitoring and assessment of potential threats to the mangroves such as unauthorized cuttings and area’s conversion to fishponds.

The officers also removed dirt, plastic, dead sea grasses, and other debris to ensure proper growth of the mangroves.

“Cooperation among us is significant to conserve, protect and restore the health and integrity of the Earth’s ecosystem,” PENRE Officer Monel said.

“This requires participation from all of us in order to better fulfill our environmental responsibility,” he added.

This year’s environmental month celebration in the country bears the theme, “Sama-samang Pagkilos, Sama-samang Paghilom: Ikaw, Ako, Tayo Ang Kalikasan.”
